Cognitive Strategies for Reading in the Content Areas
This course is designed primarily for middle and high school core content teachers to develop their competence in supporting their students’ reading comprehension and analysis within their subject areas through explicit instruction of active reading strategies using the “Cognitive Strategy Transfer Learning Routine.” The active reading strategies taught in this course are widely accepted in the field of literacy and referred to as “The Seven Habits of Effective Readers.” K-12 students who know and can deliberately activate these reading strategies are shown to have greater academic achievement and learner independence. These cognitive strategies for literacy underlie students’ abilities to meet and exceed the discipline-specific learning standards. Gaining a deeper understanding of these cognitive strategies will increase core content area teachers’ confidence and ability to take “Shared Responsibility for Literacy Development” for all their students’ literacy and learning independence. The “Cognitive Strategy Transfer Learning Routine” (TLR) is an instructional routine designed specifically for 6-12 teachers to deliver explicit instruction of cognitive strategies and promote student ownership/internalization of the cognitive strategies to facilitate independence.
Participants who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the ability to adapt the Transfer Learning Routine by creating an authentic lesson that supports students’ reading comprehension and analysis through explicit instruction of active reading strategies.

Moira’s been teaching for 25 years and has spent the last 12 supporting k-12 teachers’ efforts to serve a wider range of students effectively and creatively. At New Visions, she coaches teacher teams to support the academic and socio-emotional needs of multilingual learners. Prior to New Visions, she worked as a Spanish and history teacher in Milwaukee public schools and as a teacher educator in the City College of New York Bilingual Education and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program. Most recently, she founded a consulting firm to support schools and school systems in improving educational equity and environmental sustainability in the United States and internationally. Moira holds a B.A. from Dominican University in political science, an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin in Latin American studies, and a doctorate from Columbia University in international education development.
