Participants who successfully complete the course will demonstrate the ability to create a teaching activity using a durable learning routine and will be well demonstrate capacity to implement durable learning routines in their own classroom environment. This course will unpack learning routines for social studies teachers to use with primary source documents. The routines promote durable learning, or learning that will make ideas “stick” with students cognitively, as well as building literacy skills. The routines are vital for teachers of social studies who teach regents based courses in NYS and NYC as the social studies exams shift. The new exams will compel students to rely their document analysis skills in order to be successful on the exam; as these routines support document analysis, they are an increasingly relevant set of pedagogical approaches. The routines were originally developed for a Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources grant and have continued to live on through professional development workshops and in the New Visions Social Studies curriculum.

During the course, teachers will unpack what a learning routine is, what makes learning durable, as well as learning how to implement three core routines (Images Draw You In, Zoom in, and Life in a Box).
