Reading and Writing Like a Historian: U.S. History & the Social Studies Practices
What does it mean to be historically literate? How do we best prepare students to read and critique primary historical documents, charts, graphs, and other images? In this course, participants will have the opportunity to engage in questions, such as these, through the lens of New Visions’ U.S. History Curriculum project and the New York State Social Studies Practices. Over the course of two, six-hour sessions, participants will have the opportunity to examine the structure of a unit, explore curricular resources that support the development of key literacy skills, and practice using Google Apps for Education (GAFE) to access, comment on, modify and share curricular documents.
Our curricular materials and professional development are predicated on the idea that content knowledge, such as history, and literacy skills develop hand-in-hand. Students gain the ability to read and write through different types of texts; similarly, students expand their content knowledge in all subjects by utilizing critical reading and writing skills.
As a result of taking this course, teachers will know and be able to do the following:
- Develop an understanding of the New York State Social Studies Framework, the Social Studies Practices, and how the New Visions U.S. History curriculum incorporates the standards
- Use Google Docs and Google Classroom to adapt and differentiate materials
- Create “literacy-rich” lesson plans that are informed by New Visions U.S. History curriculum
- Attend three 4.5-hour in-person sessions
- Actively engage in classroom discussions and activities
- Complete a reflection that examines the intersection of literacy and history instruction and how your approach to lesson design has shifted as a result of activities completed on the first day of class
- Complete an original, integrated lesson plan that develops students’ content knowledge and literacy skills

Andrea began teaching through the New York Teaching Residency Program. As a teacher she began working with New Visions when they launched their U.S. History curriculum pilot in 2015. She continues her involvement with New Visions by working as a Teacher Advisory Board member for the United States History curriculum. She is a U.S. History and Government teacher in East Harlem at The Young Women’s Leadership School. In addition to an M.A. in Education, she also holds a B.A. in African American Studies, and is set to graduate with her Ph.D in American History at the end of 2017.
