Whgrades_6-12blended1crediten the Common Core introduced the eight mathematical practices, teachers became responsible for teaching mathematical habits of mind. But how exactly is this accomplished with students? This workshop will introduce an instructional routine called Contemplate, then Calculate intended to support students with Common Core Math Practice 7 – looking for and making use of structure.

Teachers will develop their abilities to execute this instructional routine through the use of a planning protocol called the 5 Practices for Orchestrating a Productive Mathematics Discussions (NCTM, 2011). The 5 Practices framework offers teachers a novel way to approach the design of classroom discussion by emphasizing the importance of anticipating student responses, sequencing discussion prompts, and connecting discussions to Big Ideas. After learning the 5 Practices and practicing the Contemplate, then Calculate routine during an in-person session, participants will use subsequent online course time to plan and reflect upon their enactments of the routine. Participating teachers will have the opportunity to plan for this instructional routine within the context of the equations strand across grades 6 through 12.

As a result of taking this course, teachers will know and be able to do the following:

  1. Develop an understanding of how students typically comprehend mathematical ideas
  2. Learn to use formative assessments to support student learning
  3. Plan lessons that utilize repeatable instructional activities to help develop core teaching practices
  4. Use Contemplate, then Calculate in the classroom

Course Expectations:

  • Attend one 6-hour in-person session
  • Spend 1-2 hours applying the strategies learned in the teachers’ own classrooms
  • Plan for the instructional routine, “Contemplate, then Calculate,” enact the routine with students, and then reflect in an online forum
  • Participate in online discussion forums where they will share five weekly reflections and provide feedback to their peers with enthusiasm and an open mind

David Wees

David is an Instructional Specialist with New Visions for Public Schools, and is responsible for producing inquiry-based curriculum aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards in high school mathematics. He has taught middle school and high school mathematics and science in New York, London, Bangkok and Vancouver. He holds a B.Sc. in mathematics, a B.Ed. in secondary mathematics, and an M.A. in educational technology.

Kaitlin Ruggiero

Kaitlin is a mathematics teacher at High School of Telecommunication Arts & Technology.  She has taught high school mathematics in the NYCDOE since 2008. She holds a B.S. in mathematics and secondary education from SUNY New Paltz and an M.A. in adolescent literacy from CUNY Hunter.
