New Visions has partnered with Google to offer course participants the opportunity to earn the Google Certified Educator Level 1 certification!
In this course, participants will learn to use Google Apps for Education (GAFE) to assign and manage rich student production tasks like argumentative essays, textual-analysis, blogging, data reports, and multimedia presentations. Participants who complete the course will have the opportunity to earn the Google Certified Educator Level 1 certification for free! GAFE is a popular, cloud-based, productivity teaching and learning platform used in many NYC DOE schools, universities and modern workplaces. Free, school-managed GAFE accounts can include core applications like Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Google Sites and Google Classroom, which, if used well, can support powerful shifts in the way classroom resources and activities are structured and assigned.
Teachers will also be exposed to “add-ons,”such as doctopus and goobric, small programs that add features to existing software, and can be used to support student learning. Such add-ons can make differentiated and group assignments more manageable, allow for improved quality and timeliness of teacher feedback, and assist with the myriad tracking, reporting, intervention, and personalized communication tasks that help empower a supportive classroom.
As a result of taking this course, teachers will know and be able to do the following:
- Set up a course website via Google Sites and/or enroll students in Google Classroom, with evidence (links or screenshots) that the online learning space:
- Serves as a repository for student learning resources and a launching point for daily tasks in the classroom; and
- Communicates assignment tasks, due dates and rubrics in an organized manner.
- Utilize Google Forms and add-ons to administer, assess and communicate feedback for quizzes, warm-ups and/or exit tickets.
- Utilize add-ons such as Google Classroom and/or Doctopus and Goobric to administer, assess and communicate feedback for at least one student task in Google Drive.
- Attend two 3.5 hour in-person sessions.
- Attend two 1.25 hour synchronous Google Hangout sessions.
- Complete asynchronous course components alongside class sessions.
- Create an online hub using the Google platform.
- Utilize New Visions-developed add-ons (Doctopus and Goobric) to provide rich, timely feedback to actual student assignments.
Successful completion of this course assumes that teachers and their students will have GAFE accounts and devices for use in the classroom context. Teachers without GAFE should obtain permission from their school leader and/or work with technology staff at their school to set up a pilot domain and student accounts for their school and/or classroom. Class time will not be used to directly support the setup of a Google Apps for Education domain, however Google offers free online resources and and phone-support to assist with this process. To accomplish the objectives of this course, participants must have regular access to a class set of reliable laptop (or tablet) devices and Internet connectivity with sufficient bandwidth to accommodate the use of Google’s browser-based and/or mobile applications.

Rachel Florman is a founding staff member at Cambria Heights Academy, a small school in Hollis, Queens, where she leads the Art/Tech Department and teaches Digital Art and Computer Science. Over ten years of teaching, she has honed her use of digital tools as means for assessment, feedback, student collaboration, and distribution and organizing of class materials. Rachel holds a Bachelors in Visual Art from Brown University and a Masters in Art and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Elizabeth Mason is an instructional specialist for technology and writing and is responsible for implementing the Drive to Write program at selected New Visions Affinity schools. Before coming to New Visions, she worked at an international school in Curitiba, Brazil, where she taught high school English and acted as a technology integration specialist. Prior to this work, she served as a teacher in Shenzhen, China and in Bushwick, Brooklyn. She holds dual Bachelor’s degrees from Texas State University in history and communications and a Master’s degree in educational technology from the University of Texas. Elizabeth is also a Google Certified Educator and often coaches other educators seeking Google certification.
This is a blended course. Some sessions will take place online via video conferences. Some sessions will be in person at New Visions for Public Schools.
