Fast and Furious: Using Data to Drive Skills-Based Writing Instruction

Frequent writing assignments inherently offer opportunities to give students feedback on knowledge and skill growth.  However, a challenge persists for even the most experienced teacher– how to provide actionable, timely and individualized feedback. Skills-Based Rubrics provide teachers with manageable data for writing instruction in all content classrooms.  The rubrics are designed to accurately gauge a student’s ability by identifying the different levels of proficiency for a given skill, the level at which a student is currently performing within that skill, and the next level of achievement for that student to work towards; skills-based rubrics are built on a Guttman analysis in which each level of achievement is constructed to include all earlier levels. The progressions found in the rubrics isolate specific levels of writing skills in order to make literacy growth visible for teachers and students. The rubrics make mastery of skills at their highest level explicit and support teachers in developing differentiated interventions.

Participants who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the ability to use rubric-driven data to make focused instructional decisions to enhance student literacy growth.

This class will be taught by Russell West Jr.

Russell joined New Visions in 2011. He directs the Astor Center for Public School Libraries and the MicroCert professional development program for teachers, leaders and school-based staff; Russell also provides legal counsel to the management team. He came to New Visions after serving as director of Humanities College Preparatory, a small learning community at Hillcrest High School in Queens. His training in adult learning focuses on professional development workshops for secondary teachers and includes facilitation workshops lead by Joe McDonald, author of The Power of Protocols. As a teacher, administrator, and adult learning facilitator, Russell has formed and facilitated hundreds of groups of adult and adolescent learners.
