Understanding Classroom Management: Tracing Student Behaviors to their Source
Focusing on understanding behavior as communication, this course prepares teachers to manage their classroom environments effectively and efficiently. It is designed to support both teachers who are currently struggling with classroom management, as well as teachers who are looking to improve their strategies. The four course themes — “Unmet Needs and Lagging Skills,” “Finding (but not using) Our Voice,” “Rules for Relationships,” and “Equal Protection: Challenging Implicit and Explicit Bias” — will guide participants as they develop, deploy, and reflect upon classroom management strategies that support rather than hinder instruction.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to articulate concrete strategies for building relationships with students, role-modeling behaviors for students, using a process for structuring classes to support student engagement, and identifying and supporting the lagging skills and unmet needs most commonly seen in their classrooms.
This class will be taught by Marie Southwell
Marie Southwell is a 30-year teaching veteran who has taught grades K-12 and multiple subjects. Currently, she is the librarian for the Graphic Arts Campus Library, where she works with three high schools with career and technical education programs (C.T.E.). She is passionate about helping learners empower themselves and creating spaces that allow all students to think, create, learn, and be seen. Throughout her career, Marie has worked with special populations both in and beyond the classroom. Marie holds two Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees from Southern Utah University, in Theater and in English, and three Masters of Science (M.S.) degrees: Special Education and Elementary Education from Hunter College, School Building Leadership from Fordham University, and School Library Media Specialist from Long Island University. She can also be found throwing the ball for her dog Toby Wan Kenobi.
